Making a Grail

The Last Crusade and Raiders are often a tie for my favorite Indy film. If judged by the VHS set in my room going up, Crusade must have been my favorite because that tape had considerably more wear and tracking lines in it.

I own really good props from Regal Robot, Pedro (ResauraJones on RPF), random Etsy sellers and more. I’d really like one from TigerSharkToo but haven’t managed to catch one for sale yet. My wonderful wife even commissioned a local vendor to make me one and it is very cool. (Made of wood, gold-leafed)

But.. I’ve always wanted to make my own. The Regal Robot one is an excellent display with its base and the paint scheme is excellent. It is a little bit more lightweight than I expected and parts of the paint scheme are excessively dusted in my opinion. Pedro’s has wonderful weight and is nearly perfect outside of his initials on the bottom.

I’ve been working on a broader Indiana Jones Pinball Topper project that will include several icons from my favorite Indy movies. To do this, I have to model an ark…a grail…etc.

For a simple cup, this model took me longer than expected. Unlike the Dial, which is mostly primary geometric shapes with glyphs tattooed on it, the Grail should include the turn marks that are indicative of pottery. For my first version I’m really happy with this result but I’m sure I’ll keep making adjustments as I work towards the multi-icon pinball topper project.
